This Happened : Claudia Brücken and Guests Live at the Scala, the trailer

In 2011, Claudia Brücken, the first lady of cinematic electronic pop, was joined by a host of special guests to perform her highly anticipated live show ‘This Time: It’s Claudia Brücken’ at London’s The Scala. The show was filmed in its entirety and will be released on DVD / CD to our own There(there) shop, various other shops and online, under the title ‘This Happened’ on 23rd July 2012.

The concert is a sensational celebration of Claudia’s life in pop music from Propaganda to Onetwo and features a host of brilliant one off collaborations. The line-up reads like a who’s who of avant pop and includes Ralf Dörper and Susanne Freytag of Propaganda; Paul Humphreys of Onetwo and OMD; Andy Bell of Erasure; Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 and British minimalist composer Andrew Poppy.

The show will be repeated live at Bush Hall, London on 19th July 2012. Buy your tickets Here(here), Hear(hear)!

Claudia Brücken

.

Claudia Brücken was one of the two girls in the two girl, two boy Düsseldorf avant pop group Propaganda, memorably -and positively- described by one critic as ‘Abba from Hell’. The first signing in 1982 to Trevor Horn’s innovative Zang Tum Tumb label, later joined by Art of Noise and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Propaganda’s debut single Dr. Mabuse was one of the strangest, darkest singles ever to make the British charts, and the follow up Duel one of the greatest and smartest. The one and only Propaganda album released on ZTT, A Secret Wish, is generally considered to be one of the decades finest and a definitive electronic music masterpiece, extravagant, surreal songs of intimacy and intrigue sung by Claudia with icy passion and impassive splendor.

After leaving Propaganda in 1985, Claudia formed the conceptual pop Act with respected electronic music pioneer Thomas Leer, producing a series of delirious hype-focused lost electro-classics that emerged out of and commented on the excess, eccentricity and effervescence of the 1980s, pointing the way ahead of their time to the dramatic electro-glitter world of Florence, Gaga and La Roux. Claudia further developed her own uncompromising personal electronic aesthetic with an album produced in 1991 for Island Records, Love: and a Million Other Things, and stuck to her synth guns throughout the 90s.

Her collaborations with Glen Gregory of Heaven 17, Andy Bell of Erasure and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode emphasized her special identity as discreet, discerning electro icon, and her album of surprising, non-electro cover versions, Another Language, produced with composer Andrew Poppy for There(there), demonstrated her ability to interpret an unusual, or sometimes familiar, pop song with complete originality.  The 21st century group she formed with Paul Humphreys of OMD, Onetwo, was the logical latest stage in her music, as much a direct follow up to Propaganda, Act and her solo work as it was a unique entity in its own right and a close, inventive relation to electro pop lords OMD. A recent comprehensive compilation of her work from Propaganda to Onetwo, Combined, also containing Act songs, solo songs, collaborations and new work, celebrated 30 years of Claudia Brücken -  none of it sounded old, all of it sounded new, revealing an adventurous narrative consistency to all of her work, whoever she collaborates with, and also a commitment to her own sense of style. She is currently working with producer Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys) on a richly entertaining album of less obvious love songs. Read and see much more at Claudia’s personal space.

Onetwo

.

One half of Onetwo is Paul Humpreys, who is also one half, and sometimes one quarter, of OMD, who began their life in the mid1970s as Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark, an exotic low tech Liverpool experiment in computer generated pop influenced by Kraftwerk and Neu! Their first single, Electricity, a manifesto made out of melody and rhythm about their serious intent to make wired pop with a weird drive, was released on the Factory label of Manchester, with a sleeve designed by Peter Saville that contained ideas about cool, mystery and post-punk secretive marketing that would influence Saville’s work with Joy Division and New Order. Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark tested, approved and distributed various ideas about the potential of electronic pop in ways that made them one of the key groups in the history of electronic pop music, alongside the Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal. OMD took sparky, warped and intensely entertaining electronic pop music into the British pop charts, and then all around the world, even into America. It cannot be underestimated how remarkable it was to see and hear such an individual group becoming a sort of pop art post punk Pink Floyd without doing the obvious or exploiting standard pop cliches. Nearly 40 years later, OMD still exist, and still wondering about the future, and what happens after the future.

One half of Onetwo is Claudia Brücken, of Düsseldorf, home to Kraftwerk, without whom etc etc. This helps make Onetwo a ghostly hint of what OMD might have been like with a female singer, as well as making Onetwo a ghostly hint of what Propaganda might have sounded like if they had been produced by OMD. Onetwo released a collection of five songs called Item and an album called Instead. Instead sounds plausible as a legitimate follow up to both Propaganda’s masterpiece A Secret Wish and classic OMD albums including Dazzle Ships, Architecture and Morality and Organisation – we would say that, but on the other hand, they all do seem to be part of the same exciting story, and the albums combine to form a soundtrack to the same series of movies, imaginary movies which cover a history of questing, liberated post war activity amongst those who had the sensibility of artists but decided to make pop music, and to make this pop music using machines.

Onetwo have supported Erasure and the Human League on various tours. They are currently working on new music, the follow up to Instead, with a working title The Origins of Artificial Intelligence. It will be released in the future.
