Onetwo at work

Onetwo the news… and the feeling is from within Onetwo that there will be a new collection of songs to follow Instead available certainly within a time frame, certainly to complete a cycle of releasing at least one album a decade in the 21st century. Onetwo, Paul and Claudia, are in the studio working on material right now, and as always there are a few working titles for  the album – Co-operation, Proven, Grey Area, Implication, You are watching…, and the old standby Project, and there is some sort of loose conceptual arrangement to the album, involving paranoia, social pressure, herd mentality and loss of control. If all continues going well, the album should appear early next year. We’ll report on progress as and when.

“The mediator between head and hands must be the heart”

Record Collector …’But what’s most exciting about Combined is that it showcases four new cuts by Brücken, including the brilliant forthcoming single Thank You. Helmed by Stephen Hague, it oozes the mystique, aural magic and existential drama that Brücken is famed for – undoubtedly a potent combination.’…

…’one of the most impressive résumés in electronic pop music’…’what’s impressive is how consistently compelling her work has been’…

…’she has most certainly still got it’…

…’get your own personal copy’… and …’and make sure you catch Claudia live’…

11 may ’11 Claudia part of the Eurovision Song Contest festivities in Düsseldorf

Stars of the electronic scene to bring 80s vibe to Stadtwerke turbine hall

Together with Kraftwerk’s Wolfgang Flür, Claudia, Susanne and Ralf of Propaganda (and Paul and Andy of OMD!) will be the stars of a very special electro night at the Turbinenhalle of Düsseldorf’s Stadtwerke on Wednesday May 11 as part of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 festivities.
‘Back in the 80s, bands like Kraftwerk, the Krupps, and Propaganda planted the roots of electronic music in Düsseldorf, and the musical style has grown from here, with branches reaching far beyond the German borders. The British band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), for example, was heavily influenced by Kraftwerk. Düsseldorf’s municipal utility company (Stadtwerke) will host an event dedicated to the music of the 80s on 11 May at 7 p.m., not only to give ‘Lena fever’ a boost, but also to show that the old 80s heroes continue to thrill fans of all ages.’

‘In the Stadtwerke’s turbine hall in Flingern, at the very roots of the Düsseldorf energy company, former Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür will read from his book ‘I was a Robot’, with musical accompaniment from Thilo Schölpen, who will interpret some of the most famous Kraftwerk songs on the piano. Next, Claudia Brücken, singer of the band Propaganda, and Paul Humphreys, OMD keyboardist, will take the stage to present hits from both bands’ repertoires with their electronic quartet ‘Onetwo’. Special guests Susanne Freytag and Ralf Dörper from Propaganda will also make an appearance, performing chart successes, ‘Dr. Mabuse’ and ‘P-Machinery’, and Andy McCluskey from OMD will also join on stage for a couple of numbers!’
To round of events a DJ from Düsseldorf’s current electronic scene will generate some party sounds in the turbine hall. Düsseldorf’s municipal utilities will raffle off 75 x 2 Tickets for May 11. Just send an email to electricity@swd-ag.de before April 21. More info at Düsseldorf’s site, auf Deutsch!

Onetwo

.

One half of Onetwo is Paul Humpreys, who is also one half, and sometimes one quarter, of OMD, who began their life in the mid1970s as Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark, an exotic low tech Liverpool experiment in computer generated pop influenced by Kraftwerk and Neu! Their first single, Electricity, a manifesto made out of melody and rhythm about their serious intent to make wired pop with a weird drive, was released on the Factory label of Manchester, with a sleeve designed by Peter Saville that contained ideas about cool, mystery and post-punk secretive marketing that would influence Saville’s work with Joy Division and New Order. Orchestral Manouevres in the Dark tested, approved and distributed various ideas about the potential of electronic pop in ways that made them one of the key groups in the history of electronic pop music, alongside the Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal. OMD took sparky, warped and intensely entertaining electronic pop music into the British pop charts, and then all around the world, even into America. It cannot be underestimated how remarkable it was to see and hear such an individual group becoming a sort of pop art post punk Pink Floyd without doing the obvious or exploiting standard pop cliches. Nearly 40 years later, OMD still exist, and still wondering about the future, and what happens after the future.

One half of Onetwo is Claudia Brücken, of Düsseldorf, home to Kraftwerk, without whom etc etc. This helps make Onetwo a ghostly hint of what OMD might have been like with a female singer, as well as making Onetwo a ghostly hint of what Propaganda might have sounded like if they had been produced by OMD. Onetwo released a collection of five songs called Item and an album called Instead. Instead sounds plausible as a legitimate follow up to both Propaganda’s masterpiece A Secret Wish and classic OMD albums including Dazzle Ships, Architecture and Morality and Organisation – we would say that, but on the other hand, they all do seem to be part of the same exciting story, and the albums combine to form a soundtrack to the same series of movies, imaginary movies which cover a history of questing, liberated post war activity amongst those who had the sensibility of artists but decided to make pop music, and to make this pop music using machines.

Onetwo have supported Erasure and the Human League on various tours. They are currently working on new music, the follow up to Instead, with a working title The Origins of Artificial Intelligence. It will be released in the future.
