Claudia Brücken’s new single and video – Everyone Says “Hi”

Claudia Brücken: “Hi”

The latest song to be released as a single from the Claudia Brücken album she made with producer Stephen Hague, The Lost Are Found, is a song written by David Bowie, ‘Everyone Says “Hi”‘. It was the only single available in the U.K. from Bowie’s 2002 Heathen album. Claudia first thought of singing the song months ago, when Bowie was to some extent less present, a little more in the shadows, than he is now. She wanted to cover the song not least because its themes -loss, mourning, and, essentially, how a great, bitter-sweet sad song can somehow, in its presentation, its sensitivity, the overall sense of love whatever the circumstances- fitted well with the sequence of melancholic but inspirational songs chosen for The Lost Are Found. It was also a form of recommendation, very much confirmed recently with the unexpected appearance of Bowie’s ‘Where Are We Now,’ how Bowie’s later, not so widely known songs can be as powerful and resonant as his more obvious early classics.

new video: Claudia Brücken – Whispering Pines

Claudia Brücken – Whispering Pines, taken from the album The Lost Are Found (released 5th November 2012)

Whispering Pines is a song from the second Band album (1969), also known as the Brown album, written by Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel. The song reminds us with its images of the forest as a lonely, sunless place, where the seasons change in their own way, in their own time, that the first three Band albums were written while the group were working and living amongst the forested hills and wooded mountains around the town of Woodstock, New York. Pines surround Woodstock, but this is a song about pines near the sea, on the edge of the wilder unknown, with waves crashing in, seagulls crying, foghorns sounding through the night, creating a deep, timeless sense of loss, and loneliness. The end of the song, where there the two singers Levon Helm and Richard Manuel perform a kind of abandoned gospel duet, reaches its resolution with the words ‘the lost are found’, which has been used by Claudia Brücken as the title of her new album. The Lost Are Found by Claudia Brücken is a collection of songs reflecting spiritual turbulence written and sung by people who like Richard Manuel have a certain ‘hurt in their voice.’ A collection of less well known pop songs and discreet classics that in their own delicate way mirror the anguish and outcast determination of the blues.

Taking on a song that could surely only be sung by the masterful Manuel is a brave thing to do, but it was a song that seemed important to cover not only because it gave her album its title but also because it richly symbolises the atmosphere of the album, and its own overall sense of loss, and isolation. The Lost Are Found contains songs set inside dreams, and lonely rooms, in empty houses, in the shadows, in the middle of dark woods, inside hostile cities, under a cold, cold sun. The song supremely demonstrates the ability of the great song to investigate and celebrate the nature of the soul, and even heal it when it has been wounded. Whispering Pines is acknowledged as one of the saddest songs ever written, and yet has the gorgeous quality of being able to cheer you up and calm you down – exactly the aim of Claudia and her producer Stephen Hague when putting together the album, to capture the exquisite experience of how a haunting, heartbreaking and somehow homeless ballad can make you feel better about your own life, help you deal with personal disapointments even tragedy, and face up to troubling times with an optimistic strength.

The video was filmed on purpose in an empty forest packed with hidden secrets, near a deserted English coastline, where something is about to happen, and was directed by Martin Gooch and Ray Moody.

Claudia Brücken’s new solo album ‘The Lost Are Found’

Claudia’s new album, ‘The Lost are Found’, is ready. She has worked with famed producer Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys, OMD, Robbie Robertson) on an exhilerating collection of intensely atmospheric songs by other people. These ‘other people’ are some of the favourite writers and artists of both Claudia and Stephen, expressing their particular obsession with the history of the pop song. Some might say it is definitely up there with the classic albums Claudia has been involved with from Propaganda’s A Secret Wish to Onetwo’s Instead. The album is both a celebration of the mood, majesty and mystery of a great pop song, and also a journey along an imaginary coast line of an imaginary country, a soundtrack to a view out to sea, and the thoughts of what lies ahead.

Singer and performer Brücken with producer and arranger Hague cover unexpected songs by the very well known – Bowie, the Band, Bee Gees, Electric Light Orchestra – songs she was always destined to sing – Pet Shop Boys, Julee Cruise – and songs by the less well known that should be well known – Dubstar, Lilac Time and Stina Nordenstam – and she sings them as though they are a reflection of her own views and voice, and an inspiring, revealing part of her own story. ‘The Lost are Found’ is a brilliant anthology of melancholy pop sung by one of pop’s most ingenious interpreters and produced by one of the great pop producers.

Onetwo at work

Onetwo the news… and the feeling is from within Onetwo that there will be a new collection of songs to follow Instead available certainly within a time frame, certainly to complete a cycle of releasing at least one album a decade in the 21st century. Onetwo, Paul and Claudia, are in the studio working on material right now, and as always there are a few working titles for  the album – Co-operation, Proven, Grey Area, Implication, You are watching…, and the old standby Project, and there is some sort of loose conceptual arrangement to the album, involving paranoia, social pressure, herd mentality and loss of control. If all continues going well, the album should appear early next year. We’ll report on progress as and when.
